We only need to turn on the television to learn that the United States has a problem with obesity. We've all heard of The Biggest Loser or Dr.Phil's Weight Loss Solution. Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are popular weight-loss programs. And then you have the drug commercials for every ailment known to man -- high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the list goes on. So let's go straight to the problem -- a lack of physical fitness. The level of our physical fitness varies with each individual. It can be affected by genetic predispositions, our sex, age, exercise habits and eating habits. Medicine can help maintain our health; however it's crucial that we don't turn all our power over to the medical profession. Individual effort is your ace, and medicine is your partner. When we're physically fit, not only do we feel and look better, but our thinking can be clearer -- due to the stress relief of fitness. So all around, we're able to work at a higher efficiency level. Many companies are incorporating incentives for their employees to work-out. It's believed that sick days will decrease and performance will be at a superior level. That in itself should be proof enough. So the two main aspects of physical fitness are:
It's clear that there are sure advantages to being physically fit. It's now up to us to find a suitable fitness program that incorporates both exercise and diet. There are numerous resources out there to help us decide what exercise regime and foods are best for us. Do your research and decide on what your eating habits are going to be, and when you're going to exercise, and what you're going to do. I know that physical fitness can be difficult to keep up especially with our busy lives and daily stresses, but the pay-offs far outweigh any of the initial handicaps we may have. When getting over this initial hump try to stay positive, remain positive even if you fall off the wagon -- you can jump back on tomorrow -- limit your temptations so don't stockpile your cupboards with chocolate chips because you know they won't just be used for cookies, and be real about what you want to accomplish -- think baby steps. There are just so many options out there. Take your pick. If you like the outdoors, think of something that you can do outdoors -- running, walking, biking or tennis. If you like machines, join a club. The key is to stick with it, and it's really not all just gruel and grind. You'll feel good about yourself and you may even find you like this new-found lifestyle!
